History of Childbirth International

1999

Nikki Macfarlane, founder of Childbirth International, begins offering training to doulas and childbirth educators in face to face workshop sessions. Each student must attend a one day workshop each month for a period of one year.

2000

Nikki begins writing the course materials in the form of student manuals that can then be used for distance training.

Nikki sets up the DOULA email list with yahoo groups to provide a place for doulas around the world to support and network with each other.

2002

Childbirth International distance program is formally set up. The first students begin on the distance program in the USA.

New trainers begin working from Singapore, where CBI is registered.

2003

The CBI students website is completed and students now have the full option of using the website or the written manuals to complete their course reading.

2004

New trainers begin based in the USA and Canada.

2005

Childbirth International launches WANNA BE A DOULA - a website to provide free information on becoming a doula.

2006

Childbirth International launches FIND A DOULA - a free listing service for doulas, childbirth educators and other birth related professionals.

2007

Postpartum Doula course launched in November.

Belly Up - Childbirth International's newsletter - is launched.

2008

CBI reaches 1,000 students registered in 56 countries.

In September Childbirth International will launch the Breastfeeding Counselor course.
